When amniotic fluid/fetal cells enter the mother’s bloodstream.

Risks factors

  • Abortion
  • Amniocentesis
  • Amnioinfusion
  • Hyperstimulation of the uterus during labor
    • With pitocin & Cytotec (misoprostol)
  • Women with uterine scarring
    • Previous cesarean section

Associated

  • Preeclampsia
  • Placental abruption
  • Placenta previa

Clinical Manifestations

  • Early signs: chest pain, pink, frothy sputum and diaphoresis
  • Shortness of breath
  • Gasping for air
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Depressed cardiac function
  • Hypoxia
  • Seizures
  • DIC (disseminated intravascular Coagulation)
