Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Part of the herpesviruses group.

Maternal CMV

– Most are asymptomatic.
Fetus is at risk if first outbreak occurs in pregnancy.
– Most dangerous in 1st trimester.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Swollen glands
  • Generalized body aches

Congenital CMV infection

This syndrome is present in 5% of infected infants:
Chorioretinitis
Microcephalia
Mental and motor retardation
Deafness
Periventricular calcifications
Seizures
