Reposted from @lalactation (@get_regrann) - If a survey showed that 80% of us are wearing the wrong bra size, imagine how many of use are using the wrong breast pump flange size. It’s been my experience that the majority of the mamas I work with are pumping with a flange size that’s too big for them, which reduces the efficiency of the pump, doesn’t empty milk well, and provides poor stimulation to the breast to make more milk. Even worse, most pump companies includes flanges that are too large for the majority of women as their standard sizes! How many mamas out there have actually had their milk supply sabotaged by the pump flanges and have blamed themselves? The thought makes me extremely sad. .

The best way to know what flange size you need is to legit measure your nipples. You measure the diameter at the base of your nipple. Your pump flange size should be 2-4 millimeters larger than your nipple diameter before you pump and 1-2 mm larger after you pump. The pump should feel comfortable with no friction. Some nipples swell a lot during pumping, so having two different flange sizes may help. Some nipples are super elastic and using something like the Beaugen Mom pump insert or a Pumping Pal flange can make for better milk emptying. Coconut oil or a quality nipple butter can help reduce the friction of pumping. Pumping with the proper flange size gives you more efficient pumping, improves comfort, and protects you from nipple or breast damage. Happy pumping!! .
